Daily Preview: China's Huang Shanshan, favorite for gold
Without reigning world champion Irina Karavaeva of Russia, who failed to complete one of her routine in qualifications and therefore did not advance, China's Huang Shanshan has become the gold medal favorite for tomorrow's final.
Huang, the 2004 Olympic bronze medalist and 2007 World Championships silver medalist, has qualified first for the final here. She will perform last among the eight finalists.
Based on the Chinese women's performance in qualifications, they could dominate the final. He Wenna, Huang's 18-year-old teammate, scored just 1.00 lower than Huang in qualifications.
He will perform immediately before Huang in the final, adding pressure and perhaps motivation to her more experienced teammate.
Canada's Rosannagh Maclennan, the reigning world bronze medalist, looks to retain her position on the medals podium. She has qualified for third for the final, outscoring 2004 Olympians Olena Movchan (Ukraine) and Natalia Chernova (Russia) in qualifications.
Although Germany's Anna Dogonadze finished only seventh in qualifications and will therefore perform second in the final, she has the difficulty level and self-control to earn a medal.
At age 34, Dogonadze is the oldest competitor, female or male, in the tournament. She is also the reigning Olympic champion.
Uzbekistan's Anna Savkina (the youngest female competitor here) and Great Britain's Jaime Moor complete the field of finalists. (JC)
