High difficulty sends Cheng to balance beam throne

(Beijing, December 3) China's Cheng Fei gained her third gold out of five women's events of the 2007 Artistic Gymnastics International Invitational Tournament at the National Indoor Stadium this evening as she presented the most difficult exercise in the final to beat silver winner Australian Lauren Mitchell and bronze winner American veteran Chellsie Memmel.
Cheng Fei, entering the final luckily as the last place finisher after falling off the beam in the qualification, almost reduplicated the fault she had made earlier. After returning to take the beam training not so long ago, Cheng gave an inconsistent performance today as she nearly fell off the beam again. However, thanks to her highly difficult routine valued at 6.7, which was one of the highest in the final, she collected 9.025 for her technical execution despite an unsteady landing and the final score of 15.725 to win the gold, which was also the fourth gold for the Chinese women's team.
Lauren Mitchell, finalist of the recent World Championships in Germany, earned 8.90 on a 6.7 exercise to combine for a 15.600 runner-up spot. Chellsie Memmel of the US, individual all-around world champion of 2005 and top finisher in the qualification round, made 8.90 on a 6.4 base to collect the bronze with 15.300.
