China sweeps women's A-A and men's team titles

(Beijing, November 29) In the women's all-around and men's team finals of the 2007 Artistic Gymnastics International Invitational Tournament held today at the National Indoor Stadium, China's Jiang Yuyuan beat a strong field to win the women's A-A title by placing first in all the four events. The Chinese men's team, made up of Lu Bin, Yan Mingyong, Liang Mingsheng, Lu Bo, Wang Heng and Feng Zhe, came from behind to clinch the men's team event.
In the women's all-around finals this morning, Jiang Yuyuan, who had ranked third in yesterday's qualification, topped all the four events to win the gold medal with a total of 61.225 points, or 1.425 higher than that of the runner-up. This was the first gold medal won at the on-going tournament and also the first gold medal produced here at the newly-built National Indoor Stadium since its delivery for use.
Daria Joura of Australia took the silver medal with 59.800pts and Bridget Sloan of the United States the bronze medal with 59.225pts. Lauren Mitchell, another gymnast from Australia, placed fourth with 57.700pts, followed by Chellsie Memmel (57.425pts), the US veteran who had just made a comeback after winning the 2005 World Championships.
The men's team final began at 6:00 p.m., with Japan, Korea, Germany, Romania, Russia, France, the United States and host China vying for top honors in the six events. The host team started slow, with Lu Bin alone doing well in the floor exercise and pommel horse, and it was with Lu Bin's high mark of 15.275pts from the pommel horse that secured an overall fourth place for China after the second round.
From the third round the Chinese team gradually found its form. Placing first in the rings and parallel bars and fifth in the horizontal bar, plus a consistent performance in the pommel horse and vaulting horse, they scored a six-event total of 275.925pts to eventually claim the team title. Japan and Korea settled for the second and third places with 272.875pts and 271.300pts respectively.
After a day's rest the three-day men's and women's individual finals will begin at 6:00 p. m. every evening starting on December 1.
